Plenary Session 9.00
The
district of modern Antalya includes the ancient
regions of Pamphylia, Lycia, and Pisidia –
though the latter two regions only partially.
The conference starts with a short account of
the prehistory of Pamphylia, where Karain stands
out as a significant center. This is followed by
a summary of the historical background from ca.
tenth century B.C. to A.D. fifth century.
The
focus is on the archaeological aspects of four
major cities in Pamphylia. Involving Attaleia,
the predecessor of Antalya, the recently
excavated necropolis, a monumental tomb, and the
gate of Hadrian will be mentioned. At Perge the
prehistoric remains from the acropolis, the
urban development to the end of the Roman era,
and important buildings such as the city walls,
south gate, colonnaded street, baths, market
place, fountain houses, theater, stadium, and
necropolis are dealt with concisely. Side is
known as the most important harbor in Pamphylia
and boasts of similar civic buildings, which
will be viewed in comparison with those at Perge.
Aspendos is treated particularly in relation to
the celebrated theater.
